40 illustrated stories to practise listening, observation, reading and comprehension.
Explore everyday adventures with Lina, Sami and their little cat, Mimo. This printable activity book combines short stories, colourful illustrations and structured activities to help children practise language, memory and attention skills.
Designed for speech-language therapists, teachers, educators and parents, this resource can be used in therapy sessions, classrooms or at home, with guidance adapted to each child’s abilities.
What’s inside?
This 135-page PDF includes 40 illustrated stories, 400 comprehension and observation questions, and 120 additional activities.
Each story spans three pages: an illustrated narrative, a page of 10 questions, and a page featuring three follow-up activities. The book also includes an introduction, a user guide, character profiles and 10 pages of suggested answers for adults.
Six ways to explore each story
-
Observe the illustration: identify characters, name objects and notice visual details.
-
Read or listen: discover a short story independently or with an adult.
-
Answer 10 questions: explore the narrative through seven story questions and three illustration questions.
-
Find the missing words: complete the story using a word bank to practise vocabulary and reading comprehension.
-
Put the story in order: arrange three paragraphs to reconstruct the sequence of events.
-
Listen and remember: recall information or retell events after an adult reads the story aloud without showing the text or illustration.
Four progressive stages
The stories are organised into four groups of 10:
-
Discover and identify: find explicit information and visual details.
-
Listen and remember: recall spoken information and follow sequences.
-
Understand and solve: explore cause-and-effect relationships and solutions within the stories.
-
Connect clues and retell: bring information together and practise more independent storytelling.
This progression is flexible. Adults can select stories and adjust the activities to suit the child’s current skills.
Skills to practise
Depending on how the activities are presented, this resource provides opportunities to practise:
-
Oral language: naming, explaining and retelling.
-
Listening and reading comprehension: identifying relevant information and understanding events.
-
Vocabulary and careful reading: choosing missing words that fit the story.
-
Auditory memory: recalling information after listening.
-
Auditory attention: following spoken stories and instructions.
-
Visual attention and observation: locating details in illustrations.
-
Sequencing and narrative organisation: putting events in order and reconstructing a story.
Flexible use in therapy, at school or at home
For speech-language therapists: use the scenes as a starting point for comprehension, vocabulary, retelling and information-recall activities.
For teachers and educators: introduce reading, discussion and sequencing tasks, with spoken or written responses.
For parents: follow a simple routine together—observe, listen, read, complete, sequence and retell.
Each story can be explored over several sessions. Adults can reread passages, reduce the number of questions, offer choices or allow extra time as needed.
